National parks in Uganda

Uganda is endowed with ten national parks that brings out the country’s outstanding ecological diversity. The country offers beautiful landscapes, dense rainforests, abundant primates, along with open savannahs, and alpine mountains serving some of the most rewarding safari experiences in the East Africa region. Each park brings a unique experience, making it possible to draft travel plans that combine all tourism activities from gorilla trekking, chimpanzee encounters, to cultural immersions,  Big 5 game viewing , and mountain hikes.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

Bwindi is one of the country’s most outstanding protected areas. It is also the world’s top destination for mountain gorilla trekking making it an exceptionally blessed spot. The Bwindi area is majorly dominated by ancient dense rainforests,  and is situated in Kisoro district, south western part of Uganda. Bwindi is King when it comes to primates, and homes to over half the world’s only remaining mountain gorillas.

What to do in Bwindi.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi’s four gorilla sectors that scatter the whole park is the key and most engaged in tourism activity in Bwindi. The park offers four gorilla tracking regions from Buhoma, Rushaga, to Nkuringo and Ruhija, each with its habituated gorilla families to offer visitors with a variety of where to gorilla track from and high chances of gorilla encounters.

Gorilla habituation experience adds primate depth given that visitors get to spend close to 4 hours with the mountain gorillas. Batwa cultural trails and bird watching are other south after activities while at Bwindi. 

Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Located in the western part of Uganda, Queen Elizabeth National Park deserves all the hype it receives. The second largest national park in the country, also prides itself as the most visited park in Uganda. The spot is mindblowing, and the scenic route to the destination is a whole wildlife experience by itself.

Top activities to dive in while at this scenic spot include game drives that offer the Big 4 wildlife action, especially the tree climbing lions in the Isasha sector. Thrilling boat cruises along the Kazinga channel connecting Lake George and Lake Edward brings visitors closer to waterlife.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Mgahinga is very close to Bwindi, and Uganda’s smallest national park, yet offers almost the same gorilla experience as Bwindi. Sitting on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes , Mgahinga offers a more intimate and intense gorilla experience.

Top activities to engage in while at Mgahinga.

Mountain gorilla trekking is the most sought after tourism activity in the park, the spot brings one to two habituated gorilla groups for visitors to choose from. Golden monkey trekking is also never on visitors’ bucket list as it brings a more joyful primate experience.

Murchison Falls National Park

The majestic park is Uganda’s largest and oldest national park and derives its name from the rapid Murchison Falls. Top attractions to see and activities to engage in may include breathtaking boat cruises to the waterfalls. Game drives along the area of Murchisons offer visitors with the most unforgettable wildlife experience.

Kibale Forest National Park.

The dense rainforests of Kibale are primate paradise in the country. The scenic park is popular as the largest host of chimpanzees on the African continent.. Top attractions include chimps in their natural shelters and a variety of different bird species. Chimpanzee trekking and chimp habituation process offers visitors a once in lifetime opportunity of observing the primates quietly without pressure for more than 1 hour.

Lake Mburo National Park

The scenic but small spot is situated not very far from the capital city and can be an excellent stop over to other safari destinations like Queen Elizabeth. Lake Mburo is the the top attraction of the area, and Game drives along the park, with exciting boat cruises on Lake Mburo are some of the most enjoyed tourism activities while at the compact park.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

As the name goes, the park shelters the 3rd highest peak of Rwenzori mountains in Africa. The mountains of the moon are undoubtedly the key attraction of the park. Top activities around the Rwenzori area include hiking to Margherita peak, Birdwatching and cultural encounters with the Bakonzo local people.

Semuliki National Park.

Located  in the western part of the country, Semuliki National Park is one of those less visited national parks in Uganda, and the turn is always low to offer the most exclusive experience. Nature walks are some of the most sought after tourism activities in the Semuliki area.

Kidepo Valley National Park

It is without doubt that Kidepo is one of those less visited national parks in Uganda given the long distance to reach the destination. The wild spot is situated in the north eastern part of the country offering a raw and intimate wildlife experience. Game drives at Kidepo bring visitors closer to herds of elephants, buffaloes, and big cats.

Mount Elgon National Park

The scenic park brings an extinct volcano on the Kenyan border, offering the most remarkable hikes and beautiful montane scenery.
