Gorilla Habituation Experience

Gorilla Habituation Experience

Gorilla habituation experience is art of accustomizing gorillas to human presence. Habituation prepares mountain gorillas for future trekking. Uganda offers a unique opportunity to spend quality time with mountain gorillas that are still in the process of getting used to the presence of humans. The standard one hour gorilla trekking process also pays off. However, limits visitors with time spent with the mountain gorillas. During the habituation process, visitors can spend close to four hours with one gorilla family.

The activity is currently open a few gorilla sectors of Bwindi, even though Rushaga sector stands out as the most reliable spot for this unique and interesting tourism activity. The experience offers  a deeper understanding of gorilla behaviour, social intelligence, and how they behave around each other. Because the gorillas are not fully habituated, the encounter feels more natural and wild. However, it is still safe and guided by experienced rangers.

Gorilla Habituation Experience Defined.

One would wonder whats the difference between standard gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation process. Some wonder whether they serve the same experience. Unlike the standard gorilla trekking, the gorilla habituation involves training wild gorillas to get comfortable with the human presence. The thrilling process also involves research and science knowledge where researchers spend a big period of time visiting the wild gorillas until they show no signs of danger or fear. The gorilla habituation experience allows interested visitors to join this insightful process for more than the standard one hour. Visitors are accompanied by the park rangers before they can follow the gorilla family group in the dense forests and observe them feed, groom or play. The longer the time the higher the chances to observe keenly the behaviours of the gorillas. This may be missed by many visitors might miss out on standard gorilla trek.

Gorilla Habituation experience Rushaga gorilla sector.

Rushaga sector may not be the finest gorilla sector than Buhoma, especially when it comes to standard gorilla experience. However, Rushaga is one of the best spots to engage in gorilla habituation experience. This gorilla sector shelters semi habituated gorilla groups that are not used to human presence. These family groups are less comfortable to large numbers of people. This makes the whole gorilla habituation experience an intimate and thrilling experience. Given the rugged nature of the terrain in Rushaga, along with dense vegetation that dominates. Visitors get the most satisfying habituation experience as they get to witness gorillas moving in different feeding areas. Professional Park rangers are well versed with the gorilla’s personality and can explain whatever behaviour visitors spot ad don’t understand. The groups here are extra limited and usually only 4 to 6 people can visit one paticular gorilla family.

Difference from standard gorilla trekking.

Whereas the standard gorilla trek only offers 1 hour with the mountain gorillas, the habituation experience is always different and gives visitors at least four hours with the gentle primate while following them as they move through dense forests. What even makes gorilla habituation experience more thrilling is that the gorillas are still getting used to human presence so they don’t fake their attitude or behaviour bringing that unmatched primate experience.

When compared to standard gorilla trekking in terms of fitness levels, gorilla habituation is actually physically demanding because visitors spend longer hours in the lush forests following the gentle primates.

Smaller groups of 6 people maximum offers a more intimate and human nature connection feeling. Many visitors often praise and recommend gorilla habituation experience and how much it showcases gorilla life. The whole gorilla habituation experience can be tiring, but its worthy every single dollar spent.

Gorilla Habituation Experience permit costs.

Given the longer process involved in the gorilla habitation process, the cost of gorilla habituation experience is slightly higher than that of the usual standard gorilla trekking at 800 USD, for foreign residents, and usually costs around 1,500 per person for international visitors. Both the standard permits and gorilla habituation permits are limited and booking in advance is highly recommended for a less challenging and seamless gorilla experience, visitors are advised to book early at least 6 to 12 months especially during the crowded  peak seasons. Reliable permit booking should be made through licensed and trusted tour operators or directly through the visitor’s preferred accommodation option.

The best time to go for a gorilla habituation experience in Uganda.

The best time for an unforgettable gorilla habituation process is without question the drier period of the year especially from June to September, given that the period brings firmer trails and generally favourable weather conditions. The wet rainy seasons between March to May and October to November can be tricky even though they bring greener landscapes, the habituation experience can become much more stressful due to muddy impassable trails and heavy downpours. Therefore for a seamless gorilla experience, the perfect window overall is the dry season of the year.
